Weighted Compression Vest Size Guide: Choosing the Right Fit

Weighted Compression Vest Guide: Choosing the Right Fit blog cover image

Our Starfish Store weighted compression vests are made from high-quality neoprene for firm, even compression, and come in sizes all the way up to Extra Large — which is rare to find.

They’re lightweight, durable, and fully adjustable at the shoulders and sides — making them ideal for school, home, or therapy settings.

But, without the chance to try it on, choosing the right size for a weighted compression vest when shopping online can be hard.

If that is you, you are not alone - our most asked question is “what size should I get?”

We want you to feel really confident and happy when ordering with us online, hence the practical sizing guide with examples of children and adults wearing our vest - Real people. Real measurements. Real photos (scroll to bottom of post).

Why Getting the Right Fit Matters

Weighted compression vests work by providing deep pressure input to the body, helping to support self-regulation, focus, and calming — particularly for people with ADHD, Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder, or anxiety.

For these benefits to be effective, the vest needs to fit snugly — it should feel like a gentle, firm hug.

One of the best things about our weighted compression vests is how adjustable they are. In this quick video, we show you how much room there is to adjust the  velcro shoulder straps and side panels on a Medium vest — perfect if you’re buying for a child who’s still growing.

Our Size Guide: Real People, Real Fits

To make sizing easier, we’ve photographed children and adults wearing each of our vests — Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large — and shared:

  • Their height
  • Their torso circumference (around the widest part of the chest/stomach)
  • Their usual clothing (t shirt) size

How to Measure for a Weighted Compression Vest

Before ordering, we recommend doing two quick measurements:

  1. Torso circumference – Measure around the widest part of the chest/stomach.
  2. Torso length – From the top of the shoulder to just below the belly button (this is how long the vest should ideally be).

Sizing Tips Based on Common Feedback

Here are some helpful things we've learned from our customers:

  • If in doubt, size up. Because our vests are adjustable, a slightly larger size often works better than a smaller one that feels too tight.
  • Room to grow matters. If your child is between sizes, choose the larger one — especially if they’re in a growth spurt phase.
  • Consider what will be worn underneath. The vest is designed to be worn over clothing — a fitted T-shirt or long-sleeve top works best.
  • Compression ≠ tightness. The vest should be snug and supportive, not restrictive or uncomfortable.
